Sunroom History

Sunrooms, also called solaria, comes from the Latin term, sol, meaning sun. Sunrooms evolved from greenhouses - structures made mostly of windowpanes to harness solar heat for use in growing plants, trees, and flowers in cold weather. It is believed that greenhouses were first constructed in Italy in the 16th century. Greenhouses were often called conservatories because they were used for conserving plant life.

Sheet glass was invented and used to make windowpanes, which were used to make greenhouses. It didn't take long for people to discover the many characteristics of windowpanes... keeping out the unwanted elements while still offering a great view. People also enjoyed the capacity for intensifying the heat of the sun.
